The "brainchild" of Dr. Don Gotterbarn, the Software Engineering Ethics Research Institute (SEERI) was established in 1998 to address the impacts of software engineering and related technologies on society, through research, education, and consultation with individuals, organizations and governments at local, national, and internationals levels.

SEERI Director, Dr. Don GotterbarnIn addition to his duties as director of SEERI, Dr. Gotterbarn teaches computer ethics, software engineering and software project management. He is also a visiting professor in England at the Centre for Computing and Social Responsibility and has been a visiting research fellow at universities in Australia and New Zealand.

SEERI established the Frontiers in Professional Ethics conferences to provide a platform for the professional communities to interact with pioneers in professional ethics from industry and academe, and to provide citizens, policy makers, and others with resources useful for understanding and addressing ethically significant problems that arise in business, computing, engineering, medicine, software engineering and technology.

SEERISEERI promotes the adoption of professional standards, such as the adoption of the Software Engineering Codes of Ethics and Professional Practices by professional societies and commercial organizations internationally, through its program of translation and educational material development.

SEERI provides teaching on software engineering and professional ethics, which informs and educates the citizens of society by working with societies in the development of curricula for software engineering ethics and professional issues, which can be delivered through academic and professional organizations and providing focused, self-study material for professional and industrial organizations.

SEERI provides national and international leadership for research in software engineering and professional ethics. It conducts research projects in software engineering and professional ethics, and organizes conferences, workshops, seminars and other events related to software engineering and professional ethics.

For example SEERI runs the Frontiers in Professional Ethics Conference in the USA, to provide a platform for the professional communities to interact with pioneers in professional ethics from industry and academe, and to provide citizens, policy makers, and others with resources useful for understanding and addressing ethically significant problems that arise in business, computing, engineering, medicine, software engineering and technology.

Since 1998, SEERI co-sponsors the international computer ethics conference series, Ethicomp, which brings together computer ethics researchers from all over the globe. Ethicomp conferences have been held in Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden. In 2005, SEERI co-sponsored an Executive Briefing of Software Security.
