About ETC

For years, faculty and staff members in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences have received telephone calls, emails, and have had direct conversation with persons from organizations throughout Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia. They ask about finding a computer science faculty member, student, or group of students to help them with find technological solutions to such tasks as creating proprietary software, building a web site, setting up a secure network, or researching a unique problem. Many of these projects have been handled in our existing classes; however, a problem arises when the students complete their studies and move on to other courses or graduate and no one is available to maintain the software, system, or website that was developed.

Spring 2008 ETC Workers

Dr. Terry Countermine, chairman of the Department of Computer and Information Sciences, saw an opportunity for the computer science students, faculty, and staff. Countermine explains, "We have established the Emerging Technology Center (ETC) in an effort to address this situation, to fill a need here at ETSU and in the Tri-Cities region, to give our students real world experience, to recruit more students, and to generate funds for equipment and software. A part of the mission of this center will be to offer support to organizations and non-profit businesses in designing, developing, and maintaining emerging technology projects."

One of the goals for the ETC is to utilize student and faculty talent and resources throughout the university. The Center uses a team approach and partners with faculty and students in the areas of computer science, marketing, graphic design, communications, and other related disciplines. The projects are developed using a well-defined Software Engineering process, including requirements gathering, project analysis and design, implementation, testing, and maintenance, with special emphasis on usability and security.
