Outstanding Student Award Ceremony
On April 13th, 2007 seven Computer and Information Sciences students were honored for their valuable contributions to the Department and 25 students in total were incorporated into the Tennessee Alpha Chapter of Upsilon Pi Epsilon at East Tennessee State University.
This year 26 students have been nominated for the Outstanding Student Award and they have all been included in the 2006-2007 Wall of Fame. The 26 nominees were: David Adkins, Rodney Anderson, Jordan Black, Matthew Campbell, Janice Derting, David Drayer, Tommy Dorsey, Chris Fair, Daniel Farley, Heather Haley, Cody Honeycutt, Rhydon Jackson, John Lane, Andrew Ledford, Bryan Lilly, Francisco Loo, Robert Martin, Marc Montgomery, Evan Owens, Travis Patton, Andy Searles, Raymond Shetley, Matthew Smith, Cody Tindell, Adam Ogle and David Valone.
The Outstanding Student Awards are given each spring to students in each of the following levels: sophomore, junior, senior and graduate. There is also a special award, Outstanding Computer Science Award, given to a student from any educational level. This year’s winners are:
Janice Ann Derting – Outstanding Computer Science Student
Heather Danielle Haley – Outstanding Sophomore
Francisco Wong Loo and Daniel L. Farley – tied for Outstanding Junior
Matthew David Campbell and Matthew Jason Smith – tied for Outstanding Senior
Cody Allen Tindell – Outstanding Graduate Student
UPE Induction Ceremony
Each year, juniors, seniors and graduate students who meet the eligibility requirements are invited to join UPE International Honor Society and the initiation is held during the Computer Science Honors Reception.
This year’s new members of Upsilon Pi Epsilon TN Alpha Chapter are: Anup Agarwal, Matthew Baker, Christopher H. Boren, Kevin Bowes, Ernest Birchfield, Jordan Black, Brent D. Bledsoe, Matthew A. Bright, Sharon A. Broyles, Christopher P. Bryant, Paul H. Cleaveland, Evan Crawford, Logan Mitchell Davis, David Drayer, Heather Danielle Haley, Robert Colby Hall, Daniel Haynes, Albert Hotlsclaw, Francisco W. Loo, Robert Stanley Martin, Evan Joshua Owens, Travis Alan Patton, Curtis C. Quick, Kevin L. Tinn and Gabriel Tocci.
UPE was first organized at Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, in 1967. The international organization now consists of chapters in various colleges and universities in North America and overseas. The mission of UPE is to recognize academic excellence at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in the Computing and Information Disciplines. UPE is the first and only, existing international honor society in the Computing and Information disciplines.
Help Desk Appreciation
This year, students who have volunteered their time at the Student Help Desk of the CS Department are also recognized during the Honors Awards Ceremony. Their hard work and dedication was appreciated and applauded by all faculty members. This year’s volunteers at the Student Help Desk are the following: Justin Bracken, Kevin Bowes, Stephen Fields, James Marshall, Howard Morris, Aaron Overall, Cody Patterson, Travis Patton, Martin Rasch, David Rickels, Ricky Schultz, Derek Slagle, Travis Sluss, Johnny Stewart and Kevin Watson.
A special thank you was also addressed to Dr. Gene Bailey for the initiation of the Help Desk and permanent guidance.
