2007-08 Outstanding Student Award Ceremony

On April 18th six Computer and Information Sciences students were honored for their valuable contributions to the Department and 15 students were incorporated into the Tennessee Alpha Chapter of Upsilon Pi Epsilon at East Tennessee State University.

This year 39 students were nominated for the Outstanding Student Award and they have all been included in the 2007-2008 Wall of Fame. The nominees were: Dondra Bartley, James Bittinger, Jordan Black, Justin Bracken, Brandon Buchanan, Kejun Cai, Dana Campbell, Olivia Colgrove, Joshua Courtney, Robert Dorsey III, Christopher Fair, Paul Fleenor, Christopher Forrester, Megan Fuller, James Gracik, Heather Haley, Robert Hall, Joshua Harris, Timothy Hutton, Brenda Isaacs, Arthur Jackson, Kapunza Kinunda, John Lane, Andrew Ledford, Bryan Lilly, Scott Longwell, Francisco Loo, Lanny Lung, Marc Montgomery, Joseph Powell, Cindy Rowland, William Sells, Derrick Southerland, Eric Stapleton, Alexander Sutmiller, Meena Thiruvelan, Shelley Thompson, Kevin Tinn, and David Valone.

The Outstanding Student Awards are given each spring to students in each of the following levels: sophomore, junior, senior and graduate. There is also a special award, Outstanding Computer Science Award, given to a graduating senior, including those who may have already graduated this current academic year. This year’s winners are:

Adam Ogle – Outstanding Computer Science Student
Christopher Forrester – Outstanding Sophomore
Heather Danielle Haley – Outstanding Junior
Jordan Black - Outstanding Senior
Joshua Harris and Bryan Lilly – tied for Outstanding Graduate Student.

UPE Induction Ceremony

Each year, juniors, seniors and graduate students who meet the eligibility requirements are invited to join UPE International Honor Society and the initiation is held during the Computer Science Honors Reception.

This year’s new members of Upsilon Pi Epsilon TN Alpha Chapter are: Justin Bracken, Dana R. Campbell, Olivia June Colgrove, Joshua Courtney, Robert A. Elliott, Christopher Fair, Chris Forrester, Megan Fuller, James W. Gracik, Arthur Rhydon Jackson, Patrick Scott Loggans, Scott W. Longwell, Marc Andrew Montgomery, Meena M. Thiruvelan, Shelley Thompson.

UPE was first organized at Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas, in 1967. The international organization now consists of chapters in various colleges and universities in North America and overseas. The mission of UPE is to recognize academic excellence at both the undergraduate and graduate levels in the Computing and Information Disciplines. UPE is the first and only, existing international honor society in the Computing and Information disciplines.

This year a special award was also given to Professor Kellie Price for her many years of service to UPE and the Outstanding Student Awards program.
